The Fibre Arts Bootcamp drum carders are both receiving a new lease of life. They are being recovered with shiny new card clothing (that’s the strange name for the steel bristle covering).
The electric carder is being equipped with a really fine 90 tpi (teeth per inch) cloth designed to handle the alpaca and fine speciality fibres. The hand cranked drum carder is getting the coarsest cloth available off the shelf with 54 tpi. This is for the chunky art batts. The drum carders were originally covered with a really heavy gauge 20 tpi cloth. Of course it did the job, but the work required to produce fine quality batts will probably be cut in half with the new clothing
Furthermore, you’ll have the chance to test them out very soon! Our next FAB workshop will be all about hand dyeing fibre and yarn as well as painting art batts. It’s going to be a divided class since it’s difficult in our current premises to have everyone around the stove or around the carders at the same time, so we’ll split up into groups to let everyone play with the toys.
Big plans are afoot to relocate next year into a purpose-built premises with lots of light and tons of space.
It’s going to be a colourful day to brighten up the gloomy weather!
I’ll keep you posted
