Spinning on a drop spindle doesn’t sound very sexy and it doesn’t match the romantic image of relaxing at a large wheel as it hums its favourite tune, whilst spooling exquisitely fine yarn. However, you can produce some amazing yarns on this cheap and simple device, which will even do some things that a fancy wheel won’t.
Our last Creative Spinning workshop was a couple of weeks ago and some eyes were opened amongst the latest gathering of spinners and would-be spinners, as they twirled their first art yarns on a drop spindle.Drop spindles come in many shapes and sizes, but they all perform the same function. Some have fancy stands that add stability, but for the beginner yarn artist, a larger, heavier model is essential to keep the spin in the yarn.
This beautiful yarn was spun using an arty batt created by a recent visitor. I’ve plied some cloth covered buttons into the yarn to add tiny punctuations to the candy colours.
My favourite spindle is the Turkish design that not only holds a steady spin, but creates a tidy
ball of yarn at the same time. David’s working on perfecting a design, which will be available in our new store, opening shortly! The next workshop coming up is on November 10th and we shall be revisiting Freeform Crochet. This is especially for those people who wanted to come to the last Freeform Crochet gathering, but couldn’t make the date. The doors are open to all though; come along and set yourself free with a Mega Hook, a chunky art yarn and if the rain eases up by then, a natter with the llamas!
